Best EV Charger for Electric Trucks: Rivian, F-150 Lightning and Silverado EV Owners

Electric trucks carry big batteries, so charger speed matters more than it does for a small sedan. Here's what I learned about sizing a home charger for a truck.

Best EV Charger for Electric Trucks: Rivian, F-150 Lightning and Silverado EV Owners

Key takeaways

  • Big truck batteries make a 48-amp charger worth considering.
  • Check your truck's maximum AC charging rate before buying anything larger.
  • A long cable (24 ft or more) helps with large vehicles and odd port locations.

Why trucks need more charging speed

Electric pickups often have batteries roughly twice the size of a compact EV. On a slow charger, a mostly empty truck battery may not refill overnight. That's why many truck owners pick the fastest Level 2 setup their car and panel can handle.

Some trucks accept more than 48 amps of AC power, but only with special high-power equipment and a large dedicated circuit. For most homes, a 48-amp hardwired charger is the practical ceiling.

Cable length and port location

Truck charge ports sit in different places depending on the brand, and trucks are long. A 24–25 ft cable gives you room to back in or pull in nose-first without stretching the cord across the floor.

Talk to an electrician first

A 48-amp charger needs a 60-amp circuit, which some older panels can't support. A licensed electrician can run a load calculation and tell you whether you need a panel upgrade or a smaller charger.
