Do electric cars need oil changes or much maintenance?
By LarryLeoUpdated October 4, 2026
Short answer
No oil changes — EVs generally need less routine maintenance than gas cars.
According to the DOE, EVs have fewer fluids and moving parts. Regenerative braking reduces brake wear. You'll still maintain tires, wipers, cabin filters, brake fluid and coolant per the schedule.
Lower maintenance is one of the cost-saving factors to include when comparing total ownership cost.
