Can I charge an electric car with a portable generator?

Short answer

Sometimes, in an emergency — but many generators can't supply clean enough power, and it's inefficient.

EV charging equipment may refuse power from generators without stable voltage and frequency or proper grounding. Inverter generators are more likely to work, usually at Level 1 speeds.

Follow both the generator's and the car's manufacturer guidance, and never run a generator indoors.
