Your Complete Guide to Electric Vehicle Charging

How long does it take to charge an electric car at home?

By LarryLeoUpdated October 4, 2026

Short answer

Overnight on a Level 2 charger for most EVs; several days from empty on a regular 120V outlet.

Charging time = battery energy needed ÷ charging power. A Level 2 charger delivering 7–11 kW refills a typical 60–80 kWh battery from low to full in roughly 6–11 hours. Level 1 (120V) delivers only about 1–1.4 kW, adding roughly 2–5 miles of range per hour.

In practice, most drivers don't start from empty — they replace one day's driving, which takes a few hours on Level 2.
