How much does it cost to charge an EV at home per month?
By LarryLeoUpdated October 4, 2026
Short answer
Monthly cost ≈ miles driven ÷ miles per kWh × your electricity rate — often $30–$70 for 1,000 miles.
Example: 1,000 miles a month in an EV that gets 3.5 miles per kWh uses about 286 kWh. At 17¢ per kWh (close to recent U.S. residential averages reported by the EIA), that's about $49. Your rate could be higher or lower — check your bill.
Time-of-use plans with cheaper overnight rates can reduce that number further.
