Your Complete Guide to Electric Vehicle Charging

What's the difference between J1772, CCS and NACS chargers?

By LarryLeoUpdated October 4, 2026

Short answer

J1772 is the common AC plug, CCS adds DC fast-charging pins to it, and NACS (SAE J3400) is Tesla's compact plug now adopted widely.

Many non-Tesla EVs sold in North America have used J1772 for AC and CCS1 for DC fast charging. NACS handles both AC and DC in one smaller connector and has been standardized by SAE as J3400.

Many automakers are transitioning to NACS ports; adapters bridge the gap in the meantime.
