Will an EV charger make my electric bill go up a lot?
By LarryLeoUpdated October 4, 2026
Short answer
Your bill rises by the energy your car uses — commonly a few hundred kWh per month.
The charger itself uses very little standby power, especially ENERGY STAR models. The increase comes from the energy you put in the car: miles driven ÷ miles per kWh.
Many households offset this by dropping gasoline costs entirely, and time-of-use rates can lower the per-kWh price for overnight charging.
